Choose Travel, Choose Life

In 2005, I was in a slump—don’t get me wrong, I had a great family, awesome friends, and was doing well in university, but something was missing. I wasn’t sure what it was, but the way I decided to find out was by packing my bags and leaving the country! When I first proposed the idea of going on an exchange to Australia, my family didn’t think I would go through with it. They knew me well (or thought they did). I had always been really intimidated by change, but now I wanted to overcome my fear. I suddenly had something to prove.

After over a year away, I came home and felt good that I had gone to the other side of the planet and survived (more like thrived!). And I knew I could do it again… so I did. After a short time at home, I moved to England and spent every spare moment discovering Europe. Then I went on to teach English in Korea. And after that? I backpacked through Asia and marvelled as the things I had known only through a National Geographic magazine came to life.

Through travel, everything that made me “me” was suddenly so much BIGGER. I somehow became even more outgoing, more confident, and surer of my opinions and convictions. I knew I could survive so long as I understood that change didn’t mean discomfort. It meant opportunity!

I also learned that change makes me open my eyes wider, keeps life interesting, and makes me feel like I am not wasting a single moment… And it all started with one little step in the right direction.
